A couple of weeks ago, I returned from a fantastic trip to Japan where I got to DJ the Puma/YO! MTV Raps Party with non-other than Mr. Beatbox himself, Doug E Fresh! This gig wasn't even the real reason why I was there. I actually was brought over to play at LOOP, a great little club with a wall of sound, with Mochizuki & Simbad. The night was rockin and I LOVED playing that room with a jumpin, hands up in the air, hollerin crowd. I stayed 2 weeks, saw many friends and met a host of new ones, to whom I send heartfelt gratitude.
I love it when I can combine what I do with worthwhile causes and this is one of them. Please come and support Tanda, an organization which works with women and orphaned kids in South Africa, on this evening of African music, dancing and celebrating life.
Tanda was started about 4 years ago by a few students - we were conducting research on models of care for orphans in South African and wanted to fundraise for some of the organizations we had met (primarily a preschool for orphans in South Africa). We soon found a woman’s income generation project that worked in the rural areas and made BEAUTIFUL jewelry! We liked the project because they pay the women up to 15 times the local market price and because the women could work at home, looking after their children as they earned their own income.
TANDA - Providing material and educational support to orphans of AIDS and impoverished children in rural South Africa
TANDA ZULU - Jewelry made by women in income generation projects in South Africa. Proceeds support Tanda projects in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
This is a cause close to my heart. Please come out & support! Get a salsa lesson, dance to the rhythms all night, have some food & help my displaced peoples...
Latin Dreams a HIAS benefit for Colombian refugees The Manor 73 8th Ave New York, NY 10014 7-10 pm Psychosocial Assistance for Colombian refugees Due to the decades-old Colombian conflict, there are more than 250,000 displaced people in the Colombian border regions, and in Ecuador more than 25,000 Colombians are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). After being forced from their homes and surviving threats and violent attacks, the refugees arrive to Ecuador suffering the effects of severe trauma. In order to help the refugees overcome symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, so they can move forward with their lives, HIAS established a program in 2003 to address their mental health needs.
Those of you who know me well know that APT is my home away from home. Not only do some of my favorite DJs play there, but it's a place I roll up alone and always end up seeing friends. It's my Cheers. So, tonight, Tuesday, I'll be playing a 6 hour set (if peeps stay til 4!) and I NEED YOU TO BE THERE!
WMC Miami Recap :: WED & THURS
after hectic wed in nyc i finally made it to miami. changed into a jumpsuit and some heels at the airport and made it in time for mike steady's best of every scene party in the design district. unfortunately was late for the food but in time for the JW mojitos! great to see everyone lookin fly - much more effort than any of us make in ny on the regular. after a bit we all headed over to check out jazzanova vs bugz at sobe's - the party was jumpin. loved seeing everyone get down and sweat a bit. i danced until i could no longer handle my heels - about 3:30. on my way out ran into K - no longer Krust - which was a nice blast from the past. hadn't seen him in years. also ran into so many of the ubiquita dance regulars who had just come from ian friday's tea party earlier in the night. wish i could have made that one, but missing my flight down cramped up my night. regardless, great music and great peoples make for a great night.
on thurs picked up my rental and headed to pick up the new SUITE 903 that had just been shipped to miami in time for the conference. i'm so happy i was able to give some of those out. there's some amazing artists on it and a few exclusives - nas, ben westbeech, amy winehouse, bugz, shae fiol, emanon w. aloe blacc, black milk, shu... just lovely. then headed to the marlin to play at the james brown tribute with my ubiquita ladies. big ups to karl injex and daz for hooking that gig up lovely. i got to spin with some of my favorites - geology, benji b, afronaught, ig culture, spinna, marky, and of course reborn - who killed it. i ended up playing jb latin remixes and latin funk. had a lovely time seeing so many friends and family there - kamala, angelo from imeem, rahim from sanbox tv, K, ian friday, adasko, suri, and the rest of the ny crew, all the new faces - AARON from bastard jazz, who laced me lovely with some great records that i'm already playing. there were so many heads there that i know i'm missing tons, but we had a great time - you know who you are!
then after a quick refresher and having my girl ronni join us from LA, headed out to the first part of the Giant Step delano series. heard rainer truby's set which was a treat as always. hadn't seen him since we played together at cielo last year. then k&d came on and so did the rain for bit. the sound was a challenge, but great vibe. we then headed to manred's party at the shore club. checked out the rub boys & eventually realized i left my ID at the delano. thank god i got it. it was a great sign! it was off to OM at this crazy y lounge. it was the club that never seemed to end. dancefloor after dancefloor, great dj after great dj, sweaty dancing, waterfalls, lights, cabanas, bizarre smoke machines. whoa. needless to say we danced the whole night away. jboogie killed it as did vikter & rich. missed bugz but had a nice time chattin with orrin. the crew was strong and the night was easy. from magically stumbling to it without knowing where we were going exactly to jonathan getting everyone in without lines or hassles. it was more than any of us expected and our souls were indeed smiling.
If you haven't been to Smooch, this is the perfect night to do so. Not only will you see beautiful photographs being sold for a good cause, but you'll also hear some great music, eat organic treats and get your groove on! I played at Smooch for the 1 year anni and the place, although small, was jumpin with kids, artists, dancers and lovely neighborhood folk.
If you can't make it or would like to know more about Aziza's Place, the photographs and how you can get involved, please read Amir's description below or visit the following links....
